Houston SX: Brit report – Wilson and Woodcock

Jeff Ward aside, Supercross has forever been an elusive mistress for British dirtbike racers. So, when we do see a strong showing of Brits take to the line in the most prestigious dirtbike championship in the world you better believe that we’ll be ready and raring to cheer them on.

Unfortunately, our trio of British battlers for 2021 became a duo last week when Max Anstie sadly suffered a back injury in a practice crash, putting him on the side-lines for the first few rounds of the new season.

Never fear though, everyone’s favourite ginger ninja will be back soon to show us all what he can do in Supercross. Until then, we’ve still got Dylan Woodcock and Dean Wilson who need our support!

Dean Wilson

Wilson had a relatively quite day on board his factory Rockstar Energy Husqvarna. The flying Scotsman started things off nicely, with the fastest time in free practice – which admittedly, means bugger all. But as Dean says on Instagram ‘it makes you feel good!’

The Scotsman proceeded directly to the main event thanks to his sixth-place ride in heat one.
A poor start in the main meant that Wilson was well and truly caught up in the mayhem as the pack furiously fought over each and every position. He would eventually bring it home in 12th place, the second of the three Rockstar Husqvarna riders.

“My starts in both the heat and Main Event weren’t that great tonight but I feel like if I can get a good start, I can definitely be up there,” Wilson said.

“I got a little bit of arm pump and I was maintaining, instead of pushing forward, which was disappointing. We’re healthy and we’ve got another chance to try on Tuesday, so we’re going to keep positive.”

Dylan Woodcock

Dylan Woodcock deserves a whole bunch of praise. This young rider from Essex is attacking the East Coast 250 region as a full privateer on board his Stunt Flying Kawasaki. Dylan – who is a product of the Team Green youth system here in the UK – is an example of how important a strong UK Arenacross series is if we want to see more British riders lining up in the USA.

Dylan has solid experience racing in UK AX scene as well as the European Supercross scene. He’s also no stranger to the United States having raced several Supercross rounds last year and having competed in various major amateur events as a youth racer.

On Saturday Woodcock only narrowly missed out on a direct transfer to the main event from his heat race. The Essex lad was engaged in an all-out war for the final transfer spot throughout the race and lost out on the position by one place after attempting a pass.

Dylan was able to avoid major carnage on the opening lap of the Last Chance Qualifier, setting himself up nicely to transfer to the main. But he kept charging forwards and made a couple of passes to take over the race lead. Woodcock held firm to take the LCQ win and advance to the points paying main event. A huge achievement for him.

Unfortunately Dylan burnt out his clutch during the LCQ and was unable to finish the main. Nevertheless, this was a fantastic start to the season for Woodcock, and something that really got us fans cheering.

A GoFundMe effort has been set-up to held Woodcock’s efforts. Clickety here, mes amis

Muc-Off Honda

Continuing our support of everything British we must quickly mention Muc-Off Honda. The Poole based cleaning company jumped on board late in the day to become the title sponsor of the squad formerly known as Penrite Honda.

Their star rider – and oldest main event winner in history – Justin Brayton put in a great show for the team in the 450 main. After running up front early Brayton crossed the line in sixth place and managed to get Muc-Off plenty of TV coverage.

In the 250 class Mitchell Oldenburg came away with a solid eighth place.
