MX Nationals Hawkstone: Kellett cleans up the Fastest 40
Hawkstone Park hosted round two of the Michelin MX Nationals Championship today with SS24’s Shaun Simpson and Todd Kellett dominating the Fastest 40 motos.
Heading into today’s ten minute timed practice, it was Simpson who topped the times. Despite having his spare bike stolen during the night he managed to keep a level head. He was followed by the recently-returned Martin Barr and red plate leader Harri Kullas, plus Brad Todd and Josh Gilbert.
Moto one is where Kellett’s sand skills really came into play, as he shot out the gate and continued to push the pace ahead of Simpson, Tommy Searle and Kullas. Verde Sports KTM’s Jake Millward also had a decent jump out the gate in the first moto tagging onto the leaders.
Team Gabriel KTM MX2 rider John adamson also had a great start, but crashed at the top of the hill causing the bike to overheat for the rest of the race, but still nursed it home to a decent finish. Meanwhile Kellett took the win, just ahead of Simpson and Kullas.
Moto two saw a game of chopping and changing on the first lap between Kullas, Searle, Kellett and Millward, but it was Simpson who really got his head down and checked out’. Barr was also in the mix for the first few laps before slipping back to seventh, just in front of Dixon Honda’s Gavin Stevenson and Gabriel KTM’s Liam Knight.
Kullas however showing smoothness and speed closed the gap on Simpson but just ran out of time to to make the final pass of the day, finishing 7.9 seconds behind the race two winner. Your top three for fastest 40 moto two were Simpson, Kullas and Searle.
With competing on both days at the MX Nationals, this meant that Kellett had the MX1 overall just ahead of Barr and Gavin Stevenson. Nathan Dixon took the MX2 overall followed by Jamie Wainwright and despite nursing a broken shoulder, Carlton Husband grabbed a third overall for the weekend.
