Houston SX: Five big surprises…

Supercross is an unpredictable game. As much as we all like to speculate and give our best guesses the beauty of the sport is that we never really know what’s coming next. Here are five things that surprised us in Houston…

  1. Gas Gas – Say it out loud, Gas Gas just won a 450 SX main event. If you would’ve said that in a public place 10 years ago they would’ve locked you in the loony bin and thrown away the key. But oh how times change…
  2. Christian Craig – Be honest now, with all the Forkner/Lawrence beef hype did anyone really have Christian Craig down as a dominant force in the 250 class? I’m guessing not. But fair play to the old dog…
  3. Suzuki holeshots (almost) – Did anyone tell Brandon Hartranft that he’s not supposed to be able to holeshot on a Suzuki? Max Anstie’s Twisted Tea team mate continually shot out of the gates on Saturday and although he didn’t quite grab the holeshots he was looking for, he was pretty damn close
  4. Beefless – Despite being continually drawn to each other on track in both the heat race and the main event, there seemed to be a distinct lack of beef between Jett Lawrence and Austin Forkner. Their racing actually seemed reasonably respectful. Maybe next time…
  5. Safe bets – Coming into the weekend you would have thought that your money was fairly safe if you bet on either one of Jason Anderson, Cooper Webb or Eli Tomac to make it onto the main event podium. But the only three guys to have actually won this title all struggled to crack the top ten. Safe bets indeed.
